Overview
The Middle East and North Africa region has long been known for its vast oil and gas reserves, but despite this long-standing reputation, another one is now emerging. Today the MENA region is increasingly well known as a major user and driver of renewable energy, with wind technologies being a particular speciality for countries in the area.
Many Experts see a key role for wind power in MENA, and see further expansion in Morocco and Egypt, with a growing pipeline of projects in Oman, KSA, and elsewhere, with significant potential for wind power applied to green hydrogen/ammonia production
This high capacity factor is particularly important for the economics of green hydrogen, which depends on maximising the electrolyser’s running hours while using the cheapest possible electricity. This explains why Egypt, Morocco, Oman and Saudi Arabia have taken the regional lead in renewable hydrogen, as have other windy coastal desert countries worldwide such as Australia, Chile, and Namibia.
